mon·o·cul·ture
/ˈmänəˌkəlCHər/
noun
noun: monoculture; noun: mono-culture: the cultivation of a single crop in a given area.

ADDOMEx Researchers utilize this concept by growing colonies of a single type of phytoplankton in a nutrient enriched water in a controlled environment where temperature and light are monitored and kept constant.

Monocultures enable researchers to study how varying treatments, such as oil, pollutants, or Corexit impact the ability of a single species of phytoplankton to live and reproduce effectively. This also makes it possible for scientists to genetically analyze the mechanisms that allow different species of phytoplankton to respond to exposure to oil by creating the exopolymers that contribute to the formation of marine snow.
